Nan Goldin

This Will Not End Well

Nan Goldin's retrospective moves through six standalone buildings, each holding a single work from its own era, mood and subject. Together the buildings form a village of slideshows (architecture by Hala Wardé).

I worked with Nan Goldin on the emotional approach to artworks: what they carry, her subtle personal perspective on them and what a visitor should feel stepping into each room. Capturing that tension, room to room, was much of the work. That became a set of architectural reference boards, each with its own emotional register. The architects incorporated them into their designs to create unique entrances, helping visitors slip progressively into the right mindset as they moved through the exhibition.

On install, I led lighting design with the local technical teams — using light to draw out the dramaturgy already built into the architecture.

Exhibition organized by Moderna Museet in collaboration with Pirelli HangarBicocca (Milan), Stedelijk Museum (Amsterdam), Neue Nationalgalerie (Berlin), and Grand Palais Rmn (Paris).
